THE QUICKIE WORKOUT

It is a common assumption that when at the gym, one needs to invest at least an hour to achieve some sort of benefit. It is this same assumption that tends to act as a deterrent when we are stuck for time. Well, the good news is that some exercise is better than no exercise and a ‘quickie’ does have its advantages. Adopting a shortened version of your workout can assist in persuading you to go the gym rather than giving it a miss!

1. Maintain your routine. Breaking your routine during the week can cause complacency to set in. This can make it more difficult to return to your regime after taking a break. Rather than missing out on a workout when stuck for time, adopt a ‘contingency workout’ that is shorter and achievable based on the time you have.
2. Recovery workout. A shortened workout can act as a recovery workout. By keeping your session light and easy, you can apply an ‘active rest’ principle to the session.
3. Injury prevention. Breaking your exercise schedule and returning at the same intensity can increase the likelihood of injury. Getting back into your routine with a shorter workout can help your body ease back into training and reduce your risk.
4. Major muscle groups. A shortened version of your workout can be simple, covering the major muscle groups.
5. Save time. Save time on your workout by choosing machines / areas within close vicinity to one another in the gym to minimise waiting times and walking from machine to machine.
